Search for the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon
In September 2022, I led a research expedition in Papua New Guinea to search for the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon, a bird species not observed by scientists for over 100 years.
Our project was part of the American Bird Conservancy's Lost Bird Initiative, whose goal is to find missing bird species around the world.
Local people knew about the species all along, and we worked together to capture the first video and photos of the bird.
Its name is Auwo.
Overjoyed. Shocked. Seeing the the first-ever camera trap images of Auwo.
